The Secret Power of Happiness
These are certainly challenging times and, wherever we look, the world seems to be awash with fear and difficulties. In many ways, fear is a highly contagious force that limits our perception and conspires to block our creativity. So, this would be a perfect moment to ask you how you’re feeling right now.
Take a moment to breathe and check your emotional status. This is important because your feelings are creating an impact on every aspect of your life. Are you aware of how your thoughts and feelings and mood are driving the outcomes in your life?
Let’s take a closer look at this intriguing subject.
Happiness radiates like the fragrance from a flower and draws all good things towards you. – Maharishi Mahesh Yogi
One of the topics we’ve touched on in previous discussions is the subtle and unexpected way that everything is connected. The surprising conclusion from recent research is that our thoughts and feelings are also interacting with our cellular function and that this happening all the time. Do you find that surprising?
We know that our health and wellbeing are influenced by a wide range of environmental factors. This includes our diet, the quality of the water we drink, how much exercise we take, the way that we breathe, the amount of pollution in our environment, whether we smoke or drink – the list seems endless.
Yet, one of the most fascinating aspects of this conclusion is that we are also deeply affected by the way we think and feel. Our cells are certainly influenced by the environment. But they’re also influenced by the quality of our thoughts and feelings and this is an area that certainly deserves our attention.
Happiness doesn’t depend on any external conditions. It is governed by our mental attitude. – Dale Carnegie
That’s why happiness is such a profoundly powerful way to enhance your health and your wellbeing. What might not be obvious is that it can equally impact on your probability of generating success as well as your capacity to create prosperity.
The problem is that it isn’t always obvious. We don’t always appreciate the subtle connection between the way we feel and the outcomes in our lives. External events often appear to be disconnected from the emotional energy we generate.
But, if everything’s connected, we can start by recognising how our emotional responses are radiating into our behaviour, influencing the way we conduct our lives. And as we acknowledge the enormous force that’s contained within our emotions, we can become aware of how that energy is flowing out into the environment, perhaps influencing others and influencing the way our lives progress.
At its most fundamental level, developing a default position of inner peace, calm and happiness is now recognised as a great antidote to the daily habits of stress and anxiety that plague and degrade the quality of our lives. We know that when we engage the power of happiness, this powerful flow of positive energy can play a dynamic role in improving our health, boosting our immune system and helping us to develop a profound sense of wellbeing.
Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared. – Buddha
And, if everything really is connected, then your new-found positive flow of energy is going to extend beyond the limitations of your emotional centers and blend in naturally with your surroundings, influencing the events that you encounter in your life and helping you to develop your potential for success, wellbeing and fulfilment.
Happiness is not the goal we should be seeking. It isn’t helpful to see happiness as some vague and distant objective that’s wholly dependent on a specific set of circumstances.
Happiness is more a way to experience the world. It becomes a state of being that helps us to value each day on a new level of deep appreciation. It encourages kindness. It promotes sharing. It speaks to us in terms of acceptance. We learn to develop an oasis of calm within ourselves that resists the tides of negativity that flow in and out of our daily experience.
So, take a moment to smile. You don’t need any reason. Just try it on for size. Notice how a simple smile can change your outlook and add a brighter interpretation to your perspective. Breathe a little more deeply. Relax your shoulders. Unclench your jaw. Let happiness banish the shadows of doubt and uncertainty. Trust in your ability to achieve whatever you set out to accomplish. Make a simple decision that from now on you’re going to enjoy the journey. And encourage others to do the same!
