You’ve probably heard it quoted on many occasions but It’s such an important nugget of wisdom that it’s worth repeating here – Success is not an accident.
And where does success come from? We’ve been told that success is a result of lots of hard work, discipline, and dedication – and no one would argue with that.
Yet, success is not the challenge we’re going to look at today. We’re going to lift the lid on one of the major reasons that success can appear to be so elusive.
We’re going to take a look at failure – and how to turn it to our advantage.
Would you like me to give you a formula for success? It’s quite simple, really: Double your rate of failure. You are thinking of failure as the enemy of success. But it isn’t at all. You can be discouraged by failure or you can learn from it, so go ahead and make mistakes. Make all you can. Because remember: that’s where you will find success.
– Thomas J. Watson
The fact is that failure is extremely painful. No one enjoys disappointment, discomfort, or setbacks. And it’s our reluctance to experience anything unpleasant that often sabotages our efforts to create success in our lives.
This is a great moment to acknowledge that failure is an integral part of life. It’s completely normal. When you learn to laugh in the face of failure, take a deep breath and just get right back to your quest, it’s a remarkably liberating experience.
In many ways, we can simplify the process by remembering that it’s all a matter of focus.
When you obsess about your discomfort and disappointment, your negative reactions dominate your horizon and crush your faith, your trust in yourself and your ambitions. It’s as if a part of you accepts that whatever you’re aiming for, it isn’t worth the pain. And that’s when many people quit. They give up. They give in.
However, when you put your focus back on your goal and imagine how great you’ll feel when you turn your ambition into a reality, your perspective shifts towards a more positive direction.
Focus is the key.
That’s why it’s so helpful to surround yourself with messages and images that represent your goal’s fulfilment. When you face a setback, the positive images help to get you back on track. You move your attention away from the disappointment and recover your enthusiasm, your drive, your determination and your discipline to keep going.
One you put failure into its appropriate context, it loses its power to influence you. You recognize that you must be moving towards your goal or you wouldn’t be experiencing setbacks. It’s a sign of progress. The obstacles are part of the journey. They’re the milestones that lead to your success.
This powerful shift in attitude can help you to reduce the stress and anxiety in your life. It helps you to maintain your focus and feel more comfortable when setbacks inevitably arise.
You can learn to dispense with any time-wasting anger or annoyance and channel your energy into feeling positive and taking action to move you closer to your goals.
Success is not an accident and learning to accept failure as an integral part of life’s great adventure is an inspirational way to break free from your fears and limitations.
