What’s holding you back in life? What stands between you right now and the fulfillment of your dreams? Are you feeling blocked or stuck in your present circumstances? More importantly, how can you possibly break free from life?
Freedom is the open window through which pours the sunlight of the human spirit and human dignity.
– Herbert Hoover
If there’s one vital ingredient in the quest for progress, for personal freedom, success, and fulfillment it has to be the power of self-belief. In many ways, the obstacles we encounter along life’s pathway are a perfect test of our resolve. They’re an open invitation to test our belief systems.
They do not represent locked and impassable barriers.
They provide an unexpected mirror in which our deeply-held beliefs are reflected.
Every human has four endowments – self-awareness, conscience, independent will, and creative imagination. These give us the ultimate human freedom.
The power to choose, to respond, to change.
– Stephen Covey
The truly formidable barriers in our quest for freedom and success will always be revealed in our attitudes, the internal responses that reveal how we feel towards the setbacks and limitations that confront us. That’s why it’s so helpful to take a step back when we run up against a seemingly impassable wall. In many cases, the changes that are required in order to overcome the barriers and difficulties are to be found within us rather than in our external circumstances. Does that surprise you?
When we believe that we’re stuck and can’t move on, we unconsciously look for evidence to prove that we’re right. We seek out the details that will confirm what we suspect. But when we believe that we’re absolutely capable of overcoming any obstacle in our lives, it’s amazing how creative we become in the pursuit of our goals and dreams.
Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.
– Viktor E. Frankl
Stepping back from the problem to look at it objectively – and with the dual benefits of distance and a change in perspective – enables us to analyze the situation with much greater clarity. This is also where we can ask ourselves a very important question. This is where we can ask whether we are part of the problem
It’s incredibly helpful to reflect on whether we’re effectively piling up barriers to our own ambition and thereby contributing to the apparent lack of progress. Because, in most cases, this is the underlying reason for the setbacks. Yes, it can be very hard to accept this kind of responsibility for what’s happening in our lives and it certainly isn’t likely to be a comfortable confrontation with our old habits of self-sabotage. But this is where significant personal growth can take place. This level of personal responsibility will reward you for having the courage to own the problem and encourage you to get to the real root cause of the issues that confront you.
To know yourself as the Being underneath the thinker, the stillness underneath the mental noise, the love, and joy underneath the pain is freedom, salvation, and enlightenment.
– Eckhart Tolle
We are taught from an early age to look for all of our answers in the world around us. It is indeed rare to encounter someone who has been taught to appreciate the value of seeking the answers within ourselves. I’d suggest that we know far more than we give ourselves credit for. And if our attitudes and beliefs conspire to create obstructions, defeats, disappointments, and delays, then the fastest and most direct way to resolve these conditions is to examine how we are influencing the situation from within the realm of our own consciousness. Adjust your beliefs. Re-align your attitudes with your goals. Eliminate the resistance in your own heart. Choose to believe that you are truly capable of overcoming any obstacle and that you are perfectly equipped to achieve whatever goal you may set for yourself. It’s never too late to achieve your dreams.
