Do you have a clear vision of where you want to go with your life? Have you made a clear plan to make your fabulous dreams a reality? Do you really believe that your goals and dreams are attainable?
If you’ve just ticked all those boxes with a resounding ‘Yes’ – congratulations! But, if you’re struggling to make progress with your plans, what could be holding you back?
Let’s begin by recognizing that having a clearly-defined goal is an essential part of taking control of your life. The message about goal-setting has been repeated countless times by every motivational speaker who’s ever run a course on boosting performance. It’s a great message. Goals create focus and demand action. They channel our energy and bring us to where we want to be. That’s got to be good.
Yet the best-laid plans sometimes go as astray and we lose confidence in our ability to get where we want to go. Doubts set in and, as the obstacles mount up, we lose faith in our quest for greatness.
Despite all the publicity about goal-setting, this happens more often than not and it’s an issue that most motivators tend to ignore.
And it’s the underlying cause of this behavior that we’re going to address in this blog.
It’s helpful to remember that most of our behavior is driven by subconscious attitudes and beliefs that are not obvious to the conscious mind. It’s as if we’re running on automatic pilot and the conscious mind, whilst an incredibly useful faculty, is definitely not driving the bus!
This is where unconscious beliefs and values can override our best intentions.
It doesn’t have to translate into something as extreme as self-sabotage – though that happens often enough. It can show up in more subtle disguises.
For example, when you bump into the inevitable obstacles and challenges that present themselves whenever you set out to achieve something worthwhile, instead of plowing on, you shrug your shoulders, accept defeat and mumble something about “It’s not meant to be”. At exactly the moment when the challenge is calling you to face the obstacle and move past it, you decide that the going’s too tough and you give up.
But the decision to quit can be traced to an underlying belief that questions your worthiness. These deeply-embedded attitudes sow doubt about whether you really deserve to reach your goals or dreams. If you don’t believe that you truly deserve to achieve your goals, it’s going to be almost impossible to fulfill your ambitions.
Learning to believe in your worthiness is a very powerful component in the process of personal transformation. This is where you remove the obstacles and self-doubts in your belief system. This is where you shift the underlying limitations and develop a positive and robust attitude that fully supports your aspirations.
One of the interesting approaches to re-designing your belief systems is to practice visualizing yourself every day in exactly the situation you wish to be in. It’s important to add a very strong emotional current to the vision. The more emotional energy – the better.
As you experience your vision with waves of joy and happiness, your subconscious will notice the disparity between your current circumstances and your imaginary projection.
As you repeat the visualization with daily frequency, your subconscious will eventually seek out ways to match your vision with your external situation.
That’s when things can get very interesting.
It’s a powerful way to harness your subconscious on behalf of your goals. But the positive emotional energy also serves another important purpose. It creates a new dynamic for experiencing success in your life. You might notice shifts in your attitude, thoughts, feelings and behavior. These are evidence of the positive shifts in your internal programming.
As a simple yet direct technique for introducing changes within your subconscious architecture, this is a fabulous method to have at your disposal. Try it today. Learn to visualize yourself happily celebrating your success. Make the vision an essential part of your daily routine, repeat it as often as you can during the day, and notice the changes that start to show up around you.
